Knaresborough Zoo first opened its gates in 1965, brought to life by Edward Milborrow, a former circus ringmaster. From elephants to chimps—including the TV-famous Enoch—otters, bats, and colourful birds, the zoo quickly became a favourite for locals and visitors alike. Milborrow stepped away in 1969, and Adrian “Nick Nyoka” Darley, a showman with a flair for exotic animals, ran the zoo until it finally closed in 1986.
