Civic Society

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website, please do have a look around and see what we get up to. If making the place you live more attractive, enjoyable and distinctive is important to you, then you might like to join us to promote civic pride – details of how to are on the website too.

But while you’re here have a quick read about what we think and how we go about it.

Knaresborough Civic Society (KCS), has a small committee and we’re aware that we need to increase in size, if we are to fulfil our potential.

However, we recognise that to do that, we need to give some pretty convincing answers to potential members who ask ‘What’s the point of a Civic Society?’ So here goes…

Q. Why would anyone want to be a member of a Civic Society?

A. We believe that residents should feel that being a member of a lively, proactive civic society is an investment in all of their futures and that having a sizeable membership gives civic societies a clear & credible mandate to protect the natural environment and built heritage of our surroundings for all to enjoy.

Q. Would it matter if your Civic Society didn’t exist?

(By the way, this is a killer question! Try it for yourself by substituting something like ‘football club’ or ‘favourite band’) Civic societies are cohesive forces which do a great job to maintain a connection with the past by holding on to the future, so as not to lose touch with the present. Civic societies have a critical role to play in being champion story tellers and reducing this connectivity risks interrupting the narrative which accompanies a place’s evolution.

So, if you’re interested in playing your part in enhancing the natural and built environment and promoting the sense of place on your doorstep, then please get in touch We’d love to hear from you and thanks for visiting!
